Advanced Concept Group

Bionics is the science that uses plants and animals as models for technology-driven innovation. It is based on studying the functional morphology of biological systems and transferring key features, through biomimicry, into sustainable materials.
The aim of this research group that belongs to Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lome IRDL UMR CNRS 6027  is to develop weather-adaptive, autonomous, and robust shape-changing architectured composite materials (metamaterials).

Total biomimicry and multiscale 4D printing constitute pivotal pillars of our research, enabling the abstraction and transfer of adaptive biological functions into sustainable metamaterials. The BIONICS group places significant emphasis on a holistic biomimicry approach, integrating in-situ resource utilization, local manufacturing, autonomous working principles, and end-of-life recovery.

In summary, a multidisciplinary approach—including eco-design, biology, physics, material mechanics, technology, and design—guides our work and promotes creativity.
