Today, we organized an exceptional international seminar in Japan, at College of Science & Technology, Nihon University, hosted by Pr M. Ueda, bringing together leading researchers from France, the Netherlands, and Japan. The event focused on groundbreaking advancements in innovative materials and structures for potential space applications. Topics included cutting-edge developments in metamaterials, origami science, 3D/4D printing technologies, and the role of instabilities in engineering novel solutions.

Program included the following talks:

Prof A. Le Duigou (IRDL) : “4D printing and biomimicry to invent novel metamaterials
Prof M. Ueda (Nihon University) : “High performance 3D printing composites
Prof T. Yokoseki (Univ of Tokyo): “Bi-stable CFRP deployable boom for SAP application on the moon
Prof T. Tachi (The university of Tokyo) :  “Origami Science – Science of wrinkles
Dr H. Yasuda (JAXA) : “Formation of solitary waves in origami-based deployable structures
Dr S. Lefebvre (INRIA): “Anisotropic trajectories for deformation and appearance control in Fused Filament Fabrication”
Dr U. Lafont (ESA) : “Example of current ESA technology development for sustainable materials and innovative composites
Dr C. Combescure (IRDL) : “Architectured materials for space: opportunities and scientific bottlenecks
